Gear

Gear doesn’t make the photographer, but every photographer knows that gear is part of the fun and, if you ask me about it, I’m likely to talk to you about it a lot more than you’d like me to :).

These are some of the cameras I’ve known and loved. If you click them, they’ll take you to Amazon where if you purchase one, I’ll get a bit of spending money. You know the drill. Now that that part’s out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff.

Street photography.

For me, street photography is anything unplanned. I carry a camera everywhere (even if it’s sometimes an iPhone). My favorites for street photography are the Ricoh GRiii, Fuji XT3 with any of their primes, and the Sony A1 with a very small Samsung 24mm f/2.8 lens.

The Sony I like because it’s higher resolution, the stabilization and focus is better and, in sort, technically it’s the best camera I’ve ever used in almost aspect.

The main reason I don’t use it as much for street photography as I do the Fuji and Ricoh cameras is because it’s so much physically bigger and it’s generally a less aesthetic experience. Sony cameras are technical marvels, but they are more of a function over form cameras. I like street photography to feel fun, so the Sony gets a bit less use there.

The Fuji XT series I like in part because it just looks good. Also, I love how the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO are all controlled by physical dials with specific stops. This lets you adjust the settings while the camera is off. This is a feature I never knew I wanted until I started using the XT2, and now I love it so much that I miss it when I use other cameras.

And the lenses. Fuji’s primes are the best looking lenses I know of, especially paired with a square hood. Looks matter! I also like the aperture rings quite a bit.
